Hartebeespoort Dam is known as the Monaco of Joburg, and for good reason. Every weekend you can find a vast number of Joburg people making the short trip to the dam to play and stay, or just play. Activities around the Dam range from the lazy to the heart pumping, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone. La Montagne Guest Lodge is perfectly situated right near Pecanwood Golf Course in the ideal spot to explore the surrounding area from.
Abseiling is done either on one of the surrounding mountain faces, or from a bridge into the Crocodile River. There are a number of companies that offer this exciting sport. One of the most exciting options is to abseil from the upper cable way station on the Magalies Mountains. The start is situated about about 150m from the Hartbeespoort Cable Way upper station.
This is a 50m high abseil that offers a magnificent sense of exposure as you descend a cliff 300m above the valley floor. The starting point and the actual decent offers an amazing view of up to 40km on a clear day. In the early mornings you may even be privileged enough to spot vultures or eagles soaring below you. After the abseil you go straight back to the upper cable station to you don’t forfeit your return cable-car journey.
Go Jet Skiing and Power Boats
If adrenaline pumping water bikes are your thing, look no further than one of the boat hire companies situated on the dam. You can hire a jet ski, or take a trip on a jet powered boat. Many of these companies offer water skiing and tube riding as well, but be prepared to get wet!
La Montagne Guest Lodge is closely associated with a number of riding yards around Harties. Take a long out ride on horse-back through a game reserve, or around one of our beautiful mountains. Should you wish, picnics and snack can be arranged provided it is spoken about before hand. Every skill level is welcome, but be aware that you must wear closed shoes and long pants.
Hot Air Ballooning
On a typical Balloon Safari you will be collected from La Montagne Guest Lodge and transported by a comfortable mini-bus. You can also be met at the Skeerpoort Balloon Field near Hartbeespoort Dam, just as the sun rises. Hot tea, coffee and biscuits are served, and if you like you can join in the fun to help the crew prepare the huge colourful balloon for flight in the calm and stable morning air. Sip champagne as you go, and enjoy what some describe as the closest thing to heaven known to man – the “magical experience” of lazily drifting with the wind in a Hot Air Balloon, on a fascinating aerial sightseeing flight over the beautiful countryside bordering Gauteng and North West Province.
